The ICL Squash Academy will be playing host to the biggest Squash event ever held in India "The 21st ICL World Men's Team Squash Championship" from 6th to 12th December 2007. In all 29 countries have confirmed participation and that includes all leading squash-playing countries like Egypt, Australia, England, Pakistan, France and Malaysia. At the last World Men's Team Championship held in 2005 in Pakistan 22 countries had taken part. England is the defending champion having beaten Egypt in the final. India had finished 11th.
Inclusive of the top ten players in the World, over 100 players are expected to be seen in action. As per the November rankings the following are the top ten ranked players:
1 Amr Shabana EGY, 2. Ramy Ashour EGY, 3. Gregory Gaultier FRA, 4. David Palmer AUS, 5. James Willstrop ENG, 6. Nick Matthew ENG, 7. Thierry Lincou FRA, 8. Karim Darwish EGY, 9. Anthony Ricketts AUS and 10. John White SCO.
The ICL Squash Academy is getting spruced up for the big occasion. There are 7 ASB glass back courts plus one permanent 4-sided all glass centre court. The glass court, which is the Centre Court has undergone a minor transformation with a new glass flooring which is approved by the WSF. In addition, a state-of-the-art new gym is getting ready in the Academy complex.
The Championship will be played in 2 stages. In the first stage, the teams will be placed in eight pools. The teams in each pool will have a round-robin league. The top two teams from each pool will progress to the knock out phase. The remaining teams will thereafter play for positions 17 to 29.
The Championship will be officiated by six WSF recognised International Referees along with other national and international Referees. The Tournament referee is Muneer Sait.
Following are the other key officials who will manage the championship: Chairman – Mr.N.Ramachandran, Championship Consultant – Maj(R) S.Maniam, Tournament Director – Manan Mashruwala.
In addition to the main championship the SRFI will be hosting the WSF Referees Conference from on December 4 and 5. International and regional referees from around the world along with 15 local referees are expected to attend the conference. |
